Prof. Cynthia Ning, director of The Confucius Institute at the University of Hawaii offers something very unique to our American High School Kids: a sports camp that is taught (mostly) in Chinese
The CHINESE LANGUAGE IMMERSION SPORTS CAMP 2007!
Some of the kids responses during and after the program:
“It was a blast!”, “I had the best time and want to come back next year!”, “It was tough, but I learned a lot!”
AMAKUA VIDEO was invited to document this project - a first of its kind in the US - "up-close and personal". The goal of this camp is to teach basic skills in speaking, writing and reading the Chinese (Mandarin) language within only 3 weeks!
In July 2007 Prof. Cynthia Ning invited 30 high school kids from across the US (incl. Hawaii) to study the Chinese language. She and her supervising team of 27 teachers & staff exposed the kids to various teaching methods and SPORTS!
Prof. Ning and her team chose Chinese national sports such as PING PONG & the Martial Arts of WUSHU to convey not only the Chinese language, but also the ancient and modern Chinese culture and people’s mentality to the American high school kids.
Besides classroom lectures and sports the program was packed to the rim with activities to experience Hawaii’s diverse culture and nature, such as Hanauma Bay.

Prof. Ning at the Chinese Language Immersion Sports Camp Program is partly sponsored by the Chinese Government through The Confucius Institute and partly through a division of the US Government, called STARTALK. This reflects the emerging need for us, American citizens, to become familiar with and to build bridges of communication with China and its people. China inevitably has become a force in the world economy, and will colorfully enter the world stage with the up-coming 2008 Olympic Games in Bejing.
If you want to learn more about this Sports Camp visit The Confucius Institute. May be you and your kids will also immerse into the Chinese language, culture and - SPORTS!
